The story of Yulla Kanda is deeply tied to the Mahabharata and local Kinnauri traditions.
According to legend, during their exile (Vanvaas), the Pandavas traveled through the Kinnaur region. They were devoted to Lord Krishna, and as a token of their devotion, they built a temple dedicated to him at this high-altitude spot. They also created a serene lake beside the temple, which locals believe was blessed by Krishna himself.
Another local belief says the lake is so sacred that no bird flies over it and no leaf falls into it. If anything disturbs its purity, misfortune is said to follow. Even today, visitors treat the lake with great respect, avoiding littering or bathing in it.
There’s also a charming Kinnauri ritual connected to the lake — pilgrims throw their traditional Kinnauri caps into the water. If the cap floats, it’s taken as a sign of good luck and blessings from Lord Krishna.

By Trek
- The trek from Yulla Khas to Yulla Kanda Lake is about 12 km one way.
- It usually takes 5–7 hours to ascend and 3–5 hours to descend.
- The trail passes through thick forests, scenic meadows, and a steep climb near the lake.
- You can do it in a day, but many prefer to camp overnight for a better experience.
By Air / Rail
- Nearest airport: Shimla, but with limited flights. Chandigarh has better connectivity.
- Nearest railway station: Chandigarh. From there, continue by road to Reckong Peo.
Best Time to Visit Yulla Kanda
- July to September: The best months. Meadows are green, weather is clear, and the famous Janmashtami festival is celebrated here.
- October to June: Not recommended due to snow and closed trails. Early October may be possible with a guide.
