The Legend of Kedarkantha

Kedarkantha is a stunning peak in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand, rising to an altitude of 12,500 feet. Its name is derived from two Sanskrit words — Kedar, meaning Lord Shiva, and Kantha, meaning throat.

According to legend, after the great Kurukshetra war, the Pandavas traveled to the Himalayas seeking Lord Shiva’s blessings. However, Shiva wished to avoid them and disguised himself as a bull. In this form, he disappeared into the earth, and different parts of his body are believed to have surfaced at various places, which later became the Panch Kedar temples. Kedarkantha, therefore, carries a deep spiritual connection to this ancient story.

They wished to seek Lord Shiva’s blessings to atone for their sins. Lord Shiva, however, did not want to meet them. Disguised as a bull, he tried to hide. When the Pandavas discovered him, he disappeared into the ground. His body parts appeared in five different places, now known as the Panch Kedar temples — Kedarnath, Tungnath, Rudranath, Madmaheshwar, and Kalpeshwar.

It is believed that Kedarkantha was the place where Lord Shiva was meditating. But he left before completing his penance. This is why the peak is called Kedarkantha — meaning Lord Shiva’s incomplete Kedar.
